If you are an adult with previous music experience online, or buying a DVD is a good way to go. Mel Bay has a great self-teaching method also.
I suggest an electric-acoustic, mostly because it's good to get used to a guitar plugged in. That way you won't need to upgrade if your going to play with a band.
